Strawberry Buttermilk Doughnuts Recipe (1)

We love a good doughnut. A few of the sisters worked at our friends doughnut shop while in high school. We love these super soft baked doughnuts. The buttermilk and fresh strawberries makes for an amazing taste. And since they aren’t fried, go ahead and eat 2 without any guilt!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 Tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla
  • 2 Tablespoons strawberry jam
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries diced small

Glaze

  • ½ cup fresh strawberries diced small
  • 1 Tablespoon heavy whipping cream
  • 1 Tablespoon strawberry jam
  • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Lightly grease cake donut pans with non stick cooking spray (I used 2 Wilton doughnut pans that hold 6 doughnuts each)

  • In a large bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Mix until well blended.

  • In another bowl combine the melted butter, eggs, buttermilk, vanilla, and strawberry jam

  • Add the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients. Mix until combined, then fold in diced strawberries. Carefully spoon mixture into doughnut pans, filling 3/4 full.

  • Bake for 7 to 9 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  • Cool on a wire rack. Then make the glaze while the doughnuts are cooling.

Glaze

  • Mix strawberries, whipping cream, and jam until blended. Then add powdered sugar and beat until smooth. Add more powdered sugar if you need to thicken the glaze more. You can drizzle the glaze over the doughnuts, or dip them into the glaze. We still had glaze left over, so we dipped them a second time after the first layer of glaze set up for a few minutes.

  • Eat right away because these doughnuts are so delicious!

  1. Deb says:

Do you think they would be just as good with blueberries???

  2. Cyd says:

Blueberries should work fine too. We also have blueberry doughnuts on our blog. Here is the link - https://www.sixsistersstuff.com/2015/08/baked-blueberry-doughnuts.html

  3. Wendy says:

What if I don't have a doughnut pan?

  4. Cyd says:

You could try putting the dough in a muffin tin, but they would turn out like strawberry muffins. For making doughnuts, you really need a doughnut pan. Now is a good time of year to buy them. There are a lot of holiday deals going on. Here is a link if you want to get them on Amazon. They ship quickly. https://www.amazon.com/Wilton-Nonstick-6-Cavity-Donut-Pan/dp/B004CYELOQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480364169&sr=8-1&keywords=wilton+doughnut+pan

  5. Felicia Sjöberg says:

Are you supposed to whip the cream before it goes into the glaze?

  6. Cyd says:

You do not whip the cream, just add it into the glaze.

  7. Mardell says:

Could you use thawed out frozen strawberries? It is hard in my part of the country to get good fresh strawberries.

  8. Kim says:

What kind of flour works best?

  9. Cyd says:

We use bleached all purpose flour. Sometimes we use Gold Medal flour, or even the store brand flour works great.

  10. Skyler says:

Can you fry these as well?

  11. Jo says:

Can I bake it as a cake instead of doughnuts or muffins? If so, about how long should I bake it for? Trying to make a special cute heart shaped cake for my honey!

We have only made it into doughnuts. Just watch it closely so as not to overcook.

Any of your donut recipes gluten-free?

  16. Pat Sherman says:

Made these Strawberry Donuts today, as printed! Off the hook good. They are easy and delicious. You are missing out if you don’t try them. Baked donuts are amazing. Quick, easy and DELICIOUS. Thank you Six Sisters for this recipe .

  17. Cyd says:

Thanks so much for your sweet comment. We are so glad you loved the doughnuts.

  18. Cyd says:

If they are, it's not on purpose. We don't have many gluten free recipes, but if you are used to subbing out ingredients, I'm sure you could adapt them.

  19. Jstern says:

We really liked these. Great texture.

  20. Valerie says:

Any recommendation on baking time for a mini donut pan?

  21. Momma Cyd says:

I'm not sure how mini your donut pan is, so just watch that first batch closely and the toothpick test is always good!

  22. Randi co*ckerham says:

Doubled the recipe. Made 20 doughnuts and 3 small strawberry breads. When the breads came out of the oven I glazed them while hot so it could soak into the bread and make them real moist. Once cooled I glazed them again to look like the doughnuts. The neighbors love when I bake.

FAQs

Are buttermilk and old fashioned donuts the same? ›

The old-fashioned doughnut may have a similar texture to that of a buttermilk doughnut, may be crisp in texture, and typically has cracks and pores on its surface.

Is it better to bake or fry doughnuts? ›

While many prefer the light and crispy texture of a fried donut, leaving the deep fryer in the cabinet and baking your cake donuts instead makes for healthier, less oily donuts. It's also safer and easier to clean up, given that you don't have to deal with lots of hot oil.

Do you use baking powder or soda for doughnuts? ›

Baking soda is used in doughnut recipes as a leavening agent, helping the doughnuts rise and become light and fluffy during the cooking process. It reacts with the other ingredients, producing carbon dioxide gas, which creates air pockets in the dough and contributes to the desired texture of the doughnuts.

Can I substitute milk for water in donuts? ›

Water makes for a lighter dough with a more delicate bite. Milk produces a tender and soft dough with more of a chewy texture. These are super important in donuts as they provide richness as well as making them fluffy.

Why do old-fashioned donuts taste different? ›

More closely related to cake doughnuts, old-fashioned doughnuts are unique thanks to their addition of sour cream and buttermilk. The sour cream and buttermilk are key ingredients for achieving this vintage recipe's taste and texture.

Is butter or shortening better for donuts? ›

Shortening traps more air bubbles and has a higher melting point than butter, so recipes using shortening tend to produce baked goods with more lift and that hold their shape during baking. Interior texture will also be softer and lighter.

Are Krispy Kreme donuts deep fried or baked? ›

Like most doughnuts, Krispy Kremes are fried (cooked in oil). Frying cooks the dough rapidly from the outside in to give the doughnuts their distinctive crispy texture. The flipper turns the doughnuts over midway through the oil.

Does Dunkin donuts bake or fry their donuts? ›

Some Dunkin' locations bake their donuts in house, but not all. There are three ways Dunkin' locations can acquire donuts, according to TikTok user and franchise owner Amir Mohamed.

What does Krispy Kreme use to fry donuts? ›

We use vegetable shortening (palm, soybean, and/or cottonseed and canola oil) for zero gram of trans fat per one serving of doughnut. All monoglycerides and diglycerides are vegetable based. Enzymes are also present.

Are sour cream and old-fashioned donuts the same? ›

Sour cream doughnuts – also known as old-fashioned doughnuts- are known for being the least dainty of the doughnut family. They're bulky doughnuts that are firm on the outside but oh-so-moist on the inside.

What can I use instead of buttermilk in donuts? ›

What works best?
  1. 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice mixed into 1 cup of milk. ...
  2. 1 3/4 teaspoons cream of tartar mixed with 1 cup of milk. ...
  3. Sour cream thinned with milk or water to the consistency of heavy cream.
  4. Plain unsweetened kefir.
  5. Yogurt thinned with milk or water to the consistency of heavy cream.

What is old-fashioned buttermilk? ›

Old-fashioned buttermilk is the whey left in the bottom of a churn, a by-product of making butter. It is light, yet substantial, with flecks of butter floating through it like gold flakes in a snow globe. Its origins are modest, if not happenstance.

What is the difference between the two types of doughnuts? ›

The Obvious Difference

Yeast doughnuts, as the name clearly spells out, are made from dough leavened with yeast (think brioche), whereas cake doughnuts are traditionally made from a kind of cake batter that uses a chemical leavener (i.e. baking powder or baking soda).
